What to Bring
For Skiing
- Waterproof jacket- lightweight, breathable and waterproof. Not insulated if you are going XC skiing-see the picture on this page. If you are going downhill skiing then an insultated jacket maybe warranted, however see notes at the end #
- Waterproof trousers -lightweight, breathable and waterproof. Not insulated if you are XC skiing. If you are downhill skiing then insulated pants maybe warranted #
- 1 x down puffer jacket- lightweight
- 1 x warm fleece top or soft shell jacket
- 1 x vest- fleece or soft shellÂ
- 2 x base layer is essential, e.g. merino wool thermal- top
- 2 x thermal pants
- Trousers- ski pants, for example soft shell or thermal tights, etc – not insulated or fleece lined-too warm.
- Beanie – a woollen/fleece hat
- 2 x woollen socks
- 1 x baseball cap (for sun protection, though a beanie is used 99.9% of the time)
- 1 x neck warmer
- 2 x gloves (a thin pair-liners and a thicker pair)
- Insulated mitts (not tooo bulky). Optional- but I use them for those morning skis- Italy might be sunny, but it is very cold on the hands. **
- Sunglasses,Â
- Block out (+30) and lip balm
- Goggles (rarely used- an alternate is “Blitz” sunny/goggles
- Water bottle (1 litre/33oz)- no larger!
- A bum/fanny bag or a small water bladder pack, with a 1 litre water capacity. Either of these are ideal to ski with. The bum bag/pack should be able to carry your water plus a snack, a spare but light windproof layer, etc. When we stop for lunch at a cafe/rifugio you will probably find yourself reaching for your puffer jacket to slip on. Keep it light and not too bulky, we are not going ski touring into the wilderness. **
- ** Once booked onto a trip an email will be sent out with photographs of these items with a few other tips.
- # If you using a layering approach to keeping warm, then an insulated jacket and trousers are not required , thus saving weight and bulk when you are packing.
Ski equipment
- Â Classic or skate skis and poles. There is room for both. For more information on what skis should I bring go to FAQ and information
- Cross country ski boots:Â I find that a combi-classic/skate boot suffices for both classic and skating and saves a lot of room when travelling.
- Ski Bag:Â Please have your skis in a ski bag. When we are transferring between venues, we will be using your ski bag to put your skis in.
ALPINE/TELEMARK
- Please consider your weight limit on ALL your flights. Emirate, Qantas, Qatar, Singapore Airlines typically have a 30kg limit (check airline weight limits , they do change). This limit will afford the luxury of bringing both your downhill skis/boots and your classic, or skate skis. .Â
- Please contact me if you have any questions.
General items
If you require a gear list for clothing and miscellaneous items outside what is needed for skiing, I am happy to assist. Please get in touch or email.
However as a general guide, as you will be skiing most days, therefore you will not require a lot of extra clothing. You will find that a pair of jeans, a good pair of walking shoes, gloves, scarf, beanie (woollen hat), a shirt /dress, and a down puffer jacket will be your standard fare of dress when going out for dinner and walking around town.
ESSENTIALS
- Walking shoes/ boots with a good tread, as the roads around all the towns and hotels are icy and at times very slippery. On some trips there may be opportunities for a snow walk, and a boot with a good tread will assist you to have a better grip on things.
- An extra set of thermalsÂ
- Swim wear- some of the hotels we are staying in will have a swimming pool, sauna and spa facilities.
Luggage
Luggage space will be tight in the mini bus. One medium suitcase, e.g. a 70 litre back pack/suitcase per person is suggested. Ideally no hard shell suitcases as they make packing that little bit harder. Please ensure your ‘carry on’ luggage bag is a 35-40 litre day pack. This will enable you to use this pack during your trip when you have to carry warm clothes, a water bottle and snack. This will help you keep organized when we are transfering to different venues. This day pack will be stored at your feet when we travel in the vehicle. So, what I am saying is, travel as light as possible.Â
