12 Day Dobbiaco-Dolomite Ski Adventure

Do you want to travel across the Alps by train? And once you disembark go skiing? Then keep reading

We start our ski holiday in Dobbiaco, which is in the of heart of the Dolomites. We pick you up at the train station in Dobbiaco, with a short transfer to our hotel. Upon settling into your hotel, let’s go for a ski!

This trip allows you time to explore what the Pusteria Valley can offer the cross country skier, with a base level at 1300 metres, which runs all the way into Austria, has hundreds of kilometres of trails available to explore on both sides of the border. We will access different villages and plateaus by train, public bus, snow mobile and our own private shuttle bus. Book your ski holiday in Italy with us for an unforgettable alpine adventure.

14 Day Option

There is a option to add 2 days to this trip and ski on the wonderful Alpi di Luzon plateau for 2 days staying on the plateau. Where you can ski out the hotel door for 30kms. Happy to discuss possibilities, so please contact me to discuss and individualize your ski trip.

12 Day Dobbiaco-Dolomite Ski Adventure Itinerary

Day 1 Toblach/Dobbiaco

Buongiorno, welcome to Dobbiaco and the Dolomites. I meet you on the train platform in Toblach/Dobbiaco, with a very short transfer to our hotel. The afternoon allows you time to settle in, explore your surroundings and if needed, hire skis. It is possible to do a gentle warm up on skis before dinner.

Day 2 Toblach/Dobbiaco

Today will see you skiing along the shores of Lake Dobbiaco and up towards the Passo Cimabanche. Enroute we will ski pass a WW1 graveyard and a chance to learn about the history of this area and its role in the conflict between Italy and Austria in 1916-18.

Day 3 Toblach/Dobbiaco

Today will see us skiing in the Val Fiscalina, with incredible views of the Dolomites. There are three conveniently located rifugios to stop off along the trails for a bite to eat. After lunch it is a leisurely gentle ski downhill back to the hotel in the afternoon.

Day 4 Toblach/Dobbiaco

A delightful ski to Moos and or San Candidio.

Day 5 Toblach/Dobbiaco

Many options exist, including a day trip into Austria.

Day 6 Toblach/Dobbiaco

A ski up to Passo Cimabanche at 1500m could be a goal for today. With several spots along the way to have lunch and a cafe.

Day 7 Val Casies

We transfer to the San Martino in Val Casies today, via an amazing ski on the high plateau Prato Platzwiese. After our ski we continue our journey and head to our accommodation in Val Casies, San Martino.

Day 8 Val Casies

Several options present themselves today. Antholz, Sesto. All delightful skis with a choice or terrain to make everyone happy.

Day 9 Val Casies

We have lots of options today, depending on weather, and snow conditions. There are four valleys to choose from and we will explore one of these each day.

Day 10 Val Casies

Today we will walk out the door of our hotel, put on our skis and ski to Santa Magdalena, at the head of our valley and ski our local trails back to the hotel.

Day 11 Val Casies

Today we ski the valley of Casies. A delightful ski from the hotel, down the valley to Welsberg. What is even better, is that there is a bus to take you back up the valley to your hotel.

Day 12 Welsberg/Monguelfo or Bolzano train station drop off

After breakfast, there will be an opportunity for a morning ski right down to the train station at Welsberg/Monguelfo, where I meet you with your luggage and assist you on to the platform. From Welsberg or Bolzano train station you can catch a train to Venice/Milan/Florence/Rome, Germany, Switzerland or Austria.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for all guests travelling with us. You are strongly encouraged to take out this cover immediately upon paying your deposit. Your travel insurance must provide cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses, snow sports, emergency repatriation, cancellation, curtailment and loss of personal effects. You will be required to show proof of your travel insurance, including a Snowsports endorsement before joining the trip. Please see Booking terms and conditions for more details.

Getting to Toblach-Dobbiaco and return

Firstly, if you are getting a little confused with place names, that is because in South Tyrol, both German and Italian are spoken. German is the people’s first language. So, every place name is represented by two to three names, German and Italian. The reason why is a long story best told over a beer on the trip. So, moving on.
We offer support to help you find the correct train to Toblach/Dobbiaco, South Tyrol, Italy. Likewise when finishing the trip, exact details of where and when will be given once you are booked on the trip, so you can organise your onward train journey.
Catching trains in Italy is a fantastic way of seeing the country. The fares are cheap, they run on time and you will see more from a comfortable seat on the train, than from an autostrada with 8 lanes of trucks and cars shooting by you. So please contact me using the details on contact page or via the WhatsApp button at the bottom on the page if you need support.
I find other train passengers are quite accommodating when they see a person travelling with a large suitcase and a big ski bag. I have found that there is always space for my skis, and I have never had to “check it in” or pay extra.
If you book about a month ahead you will find that you will have a better chance of securing a discounted seat, rather than just booking on the day. Please see me for tips on some good booking apps.
We will meet you at Toblach/Dobbiaco train station and assist you to get to our hotel in our minibus.

Pre and post trip support

We can also help in finding a hotel in either Milan or Venice and even with a few ideas of things that you might like to do. An information booklet is sent out to all guests to assist in these matters as well. Just contact me through the contact page or on the Whatsapp button at the bottom of this page.

Each skiing location and accommodation was excellent and truly mind blowing.  It is so refreshing to travel with a group of like minded cross country skiers. Both Emma and my self had amazing experience one after another.

We had a dream Dolomites ski trip this February.  Absolutely spectacular scenery, excellent snow conditions and perfect weather. It was an experience we could not have created by ourselves. Peter provided a smooth, flexible and relaxed trip, with all logistics taken care of. We went to a range of cross country areas which had enough variation to suit all ski abilities from beginner to advanced. Peter also provided lessons and I feel that over the 12 days of skiing both my fitness and skills improved immensely. The food and accommodation were exceptional and also personalised. We didn’t stay in impersonal hotels, but uniquely friendly and family oriented. I highly recommend Nordic Ski Adventures for a great introduction to cross country skiing in Italy.

We have just returned from the most amazing holiday in Italy and were totally blown away with the whole experience provided by Nordic Ski Adventures. The trails we visited were extensive, varied and well maintained, the hotels we stayed at were comfortable and well located, and the whole trip was well organised and communicated to everyone.  Going on a 16 day guided ski tour with Pete was a wonderful experience. It was actually a holiday. We just had to know what time to be in the lobby each day with our gear after the great breakfast, then we were taken to the trails of choice for the day and given great tips on how to best enjoy them.
A wonderful part of the trip was the anticipation of where were going to ski every day. The locations were spectacular and just kept getting better and better. One of the best part of the trip was the food. Being able to enjoy a wide variety of foods especially at the cool refugio's we often skied into for lunch, or a restaurant near our accommodation was delightful.                                       The variety of locations we went to created many special memories.  We rarely skied the same trail twice and the mountain scenery was absolutely breathtaking.

Our 16 day nordic ski trip to the Italian Dolomites and Alps was superb in every way! Skate skiing on beautifully groomed trails, with stunning scenery and fuelled by delicious food was the best!  Verified Loved our 16 day cross country ski trip!
New friends, amazing food, lots of laughs, lovely accommodations, oh yes and the best cross country skiing. There was so many great days of skiing I can’t pin point a highlight! The day would begin with a scrumptious breakfast, ski to a Refugio with stunning scenery , have a wonderful hearty soup for lunch , ski for a few more hours, take lots of photos , marvel the historic buildings and local farms along the ski trails, catch a bus if you are tired, enjoy another hot chocolate with whipped cream and not feel guilty, then keep skiing! Pete took us to many unique local restaurants for dinner, the food was delicious, the highlight was in Saint Martin, where a farm was attached to the restaurant and you could peer through a window from the dinning table at the miniature horses and donkeys in their stable, whilst eating the best chocolate apricot torta for dessert.   Peter was an exceptional cross country skiing teacher. He was very patient with novices, knew their strengths, limitations, and ability and taught really well accordingly. He would explain instructions one step at a time and made it easy to understand. He was always happy to clarify more if needed. Peter was super supportive of me and others when working was us. Whenever we would achieve something or make an improvement, regardless of how big, he would congratulate us. This was very motivating and really made us want to keep trying and further improve our ability. He really had time for each and every one of us. He was always interested in and asked us about our lives in general which was the icing on the cake of our time working under Peter. I highly recommend Peter and hope our paths cross again soon, especially in cross country skiing.

This is not your standard follow the leader type tour. Every day (including travel days) there was an opportunity to ski and Pete ensured that, despite a very mixed bunch, every ability and energy level had an ideal experience. Each day delivered ideal options for every mood, skiing alone, with the group, as much coaching as you want or an amazing nice sight see.   I cannot recommend Nordic Ski Adventures highly enough. We were a small group of 6 XC skiers, most of whom had never met, with varying levels of expertise (from beginners to advanced), aged from 40 to early 70.  Pete, an expert XC skier himself, managed to provide bespoke skiing experience to us all, including some ski lessons. The entire trip was excellent and super-well organised. Pete provided us all with a wonderful holiday, great skiing locations, excellent accommodation, food, and all kinds of assistance, including some walking routes when a shoulder injury stopped me from skiing for a few days. Pete is very knowledgeable, and knows his way around this part of the world.  Going on one of these trips is a wonderful opportunity to ski to your hearts' content, ski in the company of others or alone (whatever suits)  in another and absolutely gorgeous country, without the stress of having to do all the hard work of organising this yourself.  The trip was so good, that I am going back for another dose!!!!  Thank you so much Pete, I had the best time, (apart from my shoulder injury, which even you, could not have prevented!!). My son & I had a great time on the 15-day Italy XC ski trip Jan-Feb 2025. Peter Holmes provided opportunities to ski in varied terrain, always with beautiful scenery. Each evening he clearly outlined the next day's plans. When we were on the trails, he gave us excellent technique advice, leading to great improvements in our skiing performance. We chose to do a day's downhill skiiing at each of Livigno & Val Gardena, which was also excellent. Socially the trip was fun, the accommodation was perfect, and the meals were always tasty.

 recommends Nordic Ski Adventures is a brilliant boutique ski tour company.  Excellent attention to detail and a beautifully planned trip.  The accommodation was perfect and the snow and scenery sublime.  Verified Nordic Ski Adventures put on the holiday of a lifetime.
What a great ski holiday Nordic Ski Adventures put on for us. We turned up in Milan and Pete took care of the rest of the trip, travel, hotels, ski hire, lift tickets and even some of the evening meals. The two lodges we stayed in were just fabulous. I am so glad you took the time to find them for us. The ski days were catered to our level of expertise while pushing us to work hard and improve our skiing. Pete had a great knowledge of the resorts which made the trip even better. So thanks again Pete and I would not hesitate recommend Nordic Ski Adventures to anybody looking for great downhill skiing holiday. Our Italian XC Ski experience with Nordic Ski Adventures was fantastic. The tour was well planned, itinerary with beautiful scenery, charming accommodation and great food.Pete our enthusiastic guide was very knowledgeable, organised, timely and easy going.  recommends I joined a group ski holiday with Nordic Ski Adventures and had an amazing time. It was a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of all of the work Peter Holmes, our guide, put into the research of snow and locations, transport arrangements, accommodation options etc - all logistics and bookings were taken care of! It was very much appreciated. Pete is an authentic ski professional, so the best ski experience possible was certainly provided! The scenery in every location was amazing, and I truly loved the whole experience. I would totally recommend this trip to anyone who loves to ski.

 recommends Highly recommend Nordic Ski Adventures. Being a keen skier and having worked in the outdoors I didn't imagine myself doing a trip where someone else organises it. I would do this again. Pete's knowledge of where to go to ski, where to stay and eat has just made the experience not just an adventure but a holiday as well. Having someone else organise all the logistics and all you have to do is ski is just the best way to travel.
